How a Dietitian Can Help You

A dietitian can help you with the process of lifestyle change. We teach you the important skills of goal setting, self-monitoring, problem solving, relapse prevention and managing potentially tricky situations such as business lunches, take-away meals and eating for a busy lifestyle.

In Australia, 67 per cent of men and 52 per cent of women are overweight or obese according to the National Nutrition Survey, placing them at greatly increased risk for many chronic disease such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. While genes are important, research shows that lifestyle is reponsible for the majority of these cases. At the Nutrition and Wellbeing Clinic, we work with our clients to help them identify and make realistic and permanent changes to their lifestyle to enable weight control.

What to Expect From Your First Appointment

At your initial consultation we aim to get to know lots about you so that we can provide personalised advice – your medical history, your lifestyle habits and dietary pattern and, importantly, your current health and wellbeing goals. The whole process takes around 1.5 hours. We first ask you to fill out a detailed food and lifestyle questionnaire and we take measurements, such as you weight, height and body fat levels. You then go in to see the dietitian 1:1 for a complete nutritional assessment. By the end of your first visit, your dietitian will have provided you with either a tailored meal plan or personalised eating guidelines, depending on your preference, so you can immediately get started working on your goals.

    Follow Up Appointments

These are crucial to empower you with all the relevant information and practical advice you will need to make healthy choices. We build on the information you are already familiar with and adjust the content to target your priorities. The number of review sessions is determined by your personal needs and motivational level. Research shows that regular reviews with a qualified dietitian help people increase their compliance and better achieve their goals, compared to doing it alone.

    Home Visits

These can be arranged at additional cost, depending on your location. Please inquire for your specific needs.

    Phone Consultations

These can be arranged for follow-up sessions, after your initial visit and comprehensive nutritional assessment.

Our overseas clients regularly use this option. For example, after an initial face-to-face consultation at our clinic, we keep in regular contact with clients who live in Singapore, Hong Kong and Prague! Phone consultations are also useful if you live more locally but are running out of time to get to your appointment and have a land line available either at home or work.

    Email Consultations

These are a great option if you have some general food and nutrition questions. Prepayment by credit card is required. Please contact the clinic with your question/s and we will advise you of the cost, based on the number of questions and the time it will take to provide you with a considered response.

    Payment Options

We accept cash, cheque, eftpos, Mastercard or Visa.

    Cancellation Policy

In order for us to help as many people as possible, we require you to provide at least 24 hrs notice if you need to change or cancel your appointment. If 24 hrs notice is not provided, the full fee will be charged. An exception may be made for extenuating circumstances. In such circumstances, a telephone consultation can often be substituted so that you do not miss out on your session.

    Insurance Rebates

You can claim a rebate on our professional fees if you have private health insurance with the appropriate level of cover. Check with your health fund. Alternatively, you may be entitled to have five visits per calendar year subsidised by Medicare. Check with your GP to see if you qualify for the Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) program.

    HICAPS

We offer HICAPS, for on-the-spot reimbursement of consultation fees from private health funds, so you only pay the gap.
